The Choices of Degrees in Nursing School

general nursing schoolEvery nurse surely wants to be a Registered Nurse (RN). For this, she must meet the minimum requirement standard of education. There are three options of nursing education available in nursing school as a way to get RN status. They are Diploma, Associate Degree, and Baccalaureate Degree in nursing. What makes them different?


Diploma degree in nursing is obtained through a three-year education in nursing school. The nurses with diploma degree can apply for Registered Nurse (RN) passing test. The program is usually available through collaboration between a hospital and a relevant college. The students are prepared with clinical skills and any other health-related science.

Diploma in nursing has something in common with college degree or associate degree in nursing. Both are entry-level programs for nursing education. The curricula include nursing education regulatory process, nursing education practice, neurological system, metabolism, acute care, and general patient care. Both are integrated with clinical practice. The difference is that Diploma in nursing has more clinical hours for practice than associate degree in nursing.

Associate Degree

 Like the diploma, associate degree program in nursing is usually offered by a community nursing school or college. It is a two or three-year education program, after which the students get Associate Degree Nursing (ADN) status. ADN is a minimum requirement for RN application process.

Baccalaureate degree

 Baccalaureate program is a four-year nursing education in a nursing school, college, or university. After completing the study, the students earn Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree. It is provided for graduates of senior high school students who have no any nursing experiences before. It usually combines professional education and training with many liberal healthcare courses.

In baccalaureate degree, students are prepared to work in changing and growing healthcare environment. n the first two years of education program, the students are usually given any basic science, social sciences, and humanities. Later, the emphasis moves to the nursing and medical science.

In Indonesia, most of the nursing schools offer Associate degree. Only recently did some university offer Baccalaureate degree in nursing.
